I began getting connected with my internship my freshman year when I did a career exploration class in introduction to sport management. I met a gentlemen from the Portland Sea Dogs, and I stayed in contact with him from my freshman year until the end of my sophomore year, when I applied for the internship. And then when I went and did the interview, we already had a decent knowing of each other and had already been acquainted.
So the company that I worked under, they posted on the Colby-Sawyer Facebook page, looking for Colby-Sawyer students to apply. I learned how to budget a job. So I learned pretty much every skill throughout the business department. Not only does it help you realize whether it's something you want to do with the rest of your life, but it also, having a hands-on experience makes you more confident when you go into the real world.
Going through the Harrington Center right now, they will help you figure out everything that has to do with internships, resumes, interviewing. They'll help you. They'll sit you down and do a mock interview. They'll come to your classes. I'm an RA, and they also will help us with programming on campus and they're a very helpful resource.
I think it's beneficial to have such hands-on experiences because when you get into the real world, especially in business or in the sport industry, professionals in that industry care a lot about what experiences you've had. So if you have practical experience, whether it be hands-on in a class or an internship, that stands out against people that you might be competing for jobs with.
